Sergei A. Rumyantsev

Sergei A. Rumyantsev is a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Medical Science, Professor, head of the Translational and Regenerative Medicine Department at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.

In 1997 Dr. Rumyantsev graduated from the Pediatric Faculty of the Rostov State Medical University as a specialist in pediatrics. In 1997-1999 he had completed his clinical residency in pediatrics at the Department of Childhood Diseases # 1 of the Rostov State Medical University. In 1999-2002 he was a PhD student studying hematology and blood transfusion at the Research Institute of Pediatric Hematology and a researcher at the Hematopoiesis Regulation Laboratory at the Department of Molecular Hematology at the same institute. In 2002 he defended his PhD dissertation.

In 2002-2005 he headed the Department of Information Technology and Epidemiology of Hematological and Oncological Diseases at the Research Institute of Pediatric Hematology; in 2005-2013 he worked as the head of the Department of Molecular and Experimental Hematology, Oncology and Immunology at the same institute (hereafter, the Dmitry Rogachev Federal Research Center of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Immunology). In 2013-2015 Dr. Rumyantsev served as a deputy director of science and teaching at the Dmitry Rogachev Federal Research Center of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Immunology.

In 2007 Dr. Rumyantsev defended his Doctor of Medical Science dissertation.

Since 2003 he has been heading the Stem Cell Number and Viability Control Laboratory, in 2008-2009 he headed the Stem Cell and Cell Technologies Laboratory at the Stem Cell Bank of the Moscow Healthcare Department.

Dr. Rumyantsev has vast teaching experience. In 2004 he became a teaching assistant, a year later an assisting professor and in 2009 a full professor at the Department of Clinical Hematology, Oncology and Immunopathology with Course on Outpatient and Social Pediatrics at the Faculty of Continuing Medical Education of the Russian State Medical University (since 2010 – Department of Oncology and Hematology of the Pediatric Faculty at the N.I. Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University). Since 2012 Dr. Rumyantsev has been heading this department. In 2009-2015 he served as a scientific supervisor of the Youth Science Society at the N.I. Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University.

In January of 2013 Dr. Rumyantsev became the head of the newly created Translational and Regenerative Medicine Department at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.

Dr. Rumyantsev specializes in molecular hematology. He authored more than 300 scientific papers including 15 monographs, 5 guidelines, more than 50 publications in journals included in international citation databases, 6 patents. He supervised 14 PhD and 2 Doctor of Medical Science dissertations.

Dr. Rumyantsev research interests lie in the field of normal and pathological hematopoiesis, molecular hematology, biological properties of hematopoietic stem cells and their modeling, diagnostics and treatment of hematological, oncological and immunological diseases in children and teens, nanobiotechnology and cell pharmacology. For several years he has been supervising development of cell technologies for storage and processing of umbilical cord and peripheral blood cells, bone marrow for transplantation in clinical practice. Dr. Rumyantsev has created a new field of medical science integrating clinical medicine, molecular hematology, molecular genetics, cell biology, cell biophysics, biochemistry, nanobiotechnology.

Dr. Rumyantsev is a member of the Oncology Research Council of the Ministry of Health of Russia, member of the Expert Group of the Russian Science Foundation, presidium member of the Russian Science Society of Immunologists, board member of the Russian National Society of Pediatric Hematologists and Oncologists, member of academic boards of the Dmitry Rogachev Federal Research Center of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Immunology and the Hematological Center of RAMS, member of editorial boards of Questions of Hematology/Oncology and Immunopathology in Pediatrics, Oncohematology, OBGYN-Info, Frontiers in Genetics (editor and reviewer).
