Elena V. Samochatova is a Doctor of Medical Science, Professor, Board Certified Pediatrician. She started her professional career as a primary care pediatrician.
In 1966 Dr. Samochatova entered clinical residency at the Department of Theoretical Pediatrics at the 2nd Moscow State Medical Institute Named after N.I. Pirogov (currently Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University). She received her residency training at the Morozov Children’s Clinical Hospital (currently Morozov Children’s City Clinical Hospital) where consequently she was invited to occupy a permanent position.
Dr. Samochatova worked as a researcher at the first in the USSR Laboratory of Pediatric Hematology at the Pediatrics Department at the 2nd Moscow State Medical Institute Named after N.I. Pirogov.
In 1975 she successfully defended her PhD dissertation, in 1993 her Doctor of Medical Science dissertation.
Since 1991 Dr. Samochatova has worked as a deputy director of the Research Institute for Pediatric Hematology (currently Federal Research Center of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Immunology named after Dmitry Rogachev). She has actively participated in recruitment of the Institute’s personnel, establishment of the main directions of scientific research and practical care. Dr. Samochatova has managed introduction of modern treatments of blood diseases in children to Russian medicine, participated in reorganization of oncohematology departments in many Russian cities, with the support of the Care-Deutschland charity she facilitated creation of oncology and hematology centers.
Dr. Samochatova’s scientific interests aren’t limited to one topic. She performed the first study on Falconi anemia in the country, has worked on clinical developments in treatment of lymphomas in children and adolescents, and was the driving force of introduction of modern treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia. Dr. Samochatova was the first researcher in the country to learn and apply lymphocyte cultivation. She conducted a novel research on activity of thiopurine methyltransferase in Russian population.
Dr. Samochatova participated in publication of more than 150 scientific articles including articles in English and 5 monographs which became guidelines for oncohematology specialists .
Since 2008 Dr. Samochatova has been the Editor-in-Chief of Oncohematology journal. Since 2011 she is a Head of Clinical Trials Department in Federal Research Center of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Immunology named after Dmitry Rogachev. She manages research and introduction of novel approaches to diagnostics and treatment of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in children and adolescents. She’s a Principal Investigator of a multicenter study of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma treatment in these patients.
Dr. Samochatova supervised 18 PhD dissertations. Her medical practice received high praise, she holds the title of “Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation” and she was awarded the Order of Friendship.
